Air Show Tragedy: 10 Safety Tips for Handling Crowd Crushes and Stampedes

At the recent Indian Air Force’s 92nd-anniversary air show in Chennai — attended by over 15 lakh people — overcrowding and soaring temperatures led to a stampede-like situation. Five people tragically lost their lives, and nearly 100 others were hospitalised.

This tragedy has brought the critical importance of safety at large-crowd events into focus. Such heartbreaking incidents are stark reminders of the need for robust safety measures, preparedness, and awareness when attending crowded events.

Here are 10 essential safety tips to help protect yourself and others:

1. Plan ahead and be well-informed

Research the event in advance. Check the expected crowd size, weather forecasts, and any specific safety advisories. Stay informed about potential choke points or areas prone to congestion, which can become dangerous in a rush.

2. Identify emergency exits and medical services

Familiarise yourself with the venue’s layout. Identify at least two emergency exits and know the locations of first aid stations and emergency medical services on-site. In crowded events, knowing where help is available can be lifesaving.

3. Stay hydrated and take breaks

Particularly in hot weather, staying hydrated is crucial. Carry a water bottle and take regular breaks to avoid exhaustion or overheating. Listen to your body, and don’t hesitate to rest if needed.

4. Dress appropriately

Opt for comfortable and breathable clothing and footwear that suits the event and weather conditions. Avoid long, flowy outfits or accessories that can get tangled. Carry identification with emergency contact information for added safety.

5. Stay with your group

Whether you’re attending with friends or family, stay together. Decide on a meeting point beforehand in case you get separated, such as a recognisable landmark or specific area at the venue.

6. Be alert and follow instructions

In case of an emergency, remain calm and follow instructions from event staff or authorities. Pay attention to your surroundings, especially in areas prone to crowd build-up. Avoid panic-induced rushes and follow the crowd safely to exits.

7. Keep your belongings safe

Use secure bags with zippers or small backpacks to keep your belongings safe from theft. Avoid bringing expensive items or flashy jewellery to minimise the risk of losing valuables.

If you are stuck in a stampede or crowd crush and happen to drop your phone or wallet, leave it; do not bend to pick it up. It will be difficult to get back up against a surging crowd.

8. Know when to leave

Always have an exit plan. Avoid getting stuck in overcrowded zones and be ready to leave early if the situation becomes uncomfortable. Identify safer, less crowded routes ahead of time for easy departure.

If you are pushed, keep a firm footing and go with the flow, not against the mass. When there’s a lull, move diagonally towards the edge of the crowd to reduce the pressure around you.

9. Avoid high-crowd pressure points

Stay away from barriers, fences, or walls where crowd pressure can build up and create choke points. These areas can be dangerous if the crowd suddenly moves, and you may find yourself pinned against immovable objects.

If you are attending with elderly people or toddlers, stay in areas with fewer people to reduce the risk of accidents or injury.

10. Protect your head, control your breathing

If you fall into a crowd, curl into a ball and protect your head. Stay calm and try to stand as quickly as possible. If you feel suffocated, control your breathing and use your arms to guard your chest and face to maintain breathing space.

By following these tips, you can help ensure both your safety and the safety of those around you at large events. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and enjoy responsibly.

Your safety matters.
