Captain Dr Sunaina Singh’s journey from a small village in Haryana to becoming a prominent figure in the Indian Army and beyond is proof of her determination and courage. Despite the societal belief that “Army jobs don’t suit girls,” she proved them wrong. “But I lived my dream in the army for 10 years,” she says. Coming from a family of teachers, with both her parents in the profession, people expected her to follow in their footsteps.
However, Sunaina harboured a different vision inspired by her dadu (grandfather), a freedom fighter. His words, “Desh ke liye kuch karna” (Do something for the country), instilled in her an intense sense of duty and the desire to serve the nation.
In 2010, she became the only girl from her village to join the Indian Army. Even though she faced various physical and mental challenges, she grew stronger with every obstacle. Wearing the uniform with immense pride, she carried her grandfather’s legacy forward. It was also within the army that she found her life partner, united by a shared passion for serving the nation. Together, they are raising their son with the same values of duty and commitment to the country.
However, her journey did not end with her time in the army. Taking up a role as a Services Selection Board (SSB) mentor, she began guiding over a thousand young women, helping them break barriers and create their own legacies. “True strength is about building others as you rise. Because serving the nation isn’t just about a uniform, it is about making a difference in any way you can,” she believes.
Sunaina now runs workshops and motivational talks across schools and colleges, providing essential guidance and information to help students pursue their dreams. Her story stands out as an army officer, life coach, trainer, sports psychologist, and SSB mentor as she is committed to empowering others to achieve greatness. Her belief that life is shaped by one’s priorities reminds us that both professional and personal success require balance and sacrifice.
