In a country where people are often judged by their economic background, dignity is a privilege many cannot afford. The struggle to earn a fair wage, the humiliation of being ignored, and the constant battle to be heard — these are everyday realities for millions. But education has the power to break these barriers, and Hemant K Pareek is proof of that.
Born in Biran, Rajasthan, Hemant grew up watching his mother, a daily wage labourer, fight for her rightful earnings. The first time he heard the word ‘Collector’ was when she was pleading with an MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005) official for her wages. That moment changed everything for him. He made a promise to become the officer people like his mother deserved.
With just Rs 1,400 in his pocket, he left for Delhi, chasing a dream many considered impossible. He had no fancy coaching, studied in a Hindi-medium school, and even failed English in his diploma course.
People told him the IAS was only for the privileged. But Hemant refused to give up. Using free resources, YouTube, and guidance from his university mentors, he persevered.
In his very first attempt, he secured an All India Rank of 884 in UPSC 2023. When he broke the news, his mother cried with joy. Today, as he trains at LBSNAA, those who once doubted him now celebrate his success. But for Hemant, this is just the beginning. His dream is to become a Collector, and he won’t stop until he makes it happen.
